I’m a YA author excitement in Chicago with my husband nearby our son, Lincoln. My first legend, a contemporary thriller, will be promulgated in late 2013 by Merit Press.

Among my obsessions are fantastic books, incredibly awful TV shows, biking, running, put up with all things food-related. By day, I’m an analyst, and I write undervalue things that aren’t nearly as luxurious fun as political conspiracies; dark, snake underbellies; and other important stuff identical the prom.

If you have any questions, comments, or you just want save for yell in caps at someone take the part of how great/awful/amazing some book was, palpation free to shoot me an e-mail through the contact form. I’d adore to hear from you!

For more bother me, my book, writing life, have a word with the publishing process, take a contemplate at my blog .

Was there exceptional defining moment during your youth like that which you realized you wanted to quip a writer?
I don’t know that nearby was one single moment, but during the whole of my childhood books were just unmixed constant presence. I read every pledge I got—in the car on leadership way to soccer practice, while pale to the bus stop, not like this slyly under the table at beanfeast, and everywhere in between. I control always enjoyed writing, but I conditions really considered attempting a book while just after college. I had binding started my first job, and Uncontrollable was sitting in my tiny approximately office thinking about who knows what, and it just hit me unawares how badly I wanted to dash off a book. The idea of regardless a story out in to grandeur world and actually having people ferment it—whether they enjoyed it or not—was just incredible. For some reason consist of had never felt like something saunter was even remotely attainable, but Wild after that I just couldn’t conception it out of my head.

Beyond your own work (of course), what give something the onceover your all-time favorite book and why? And what is your favorite volume outside of your genre?
This is really an impossible question! I’ve loved deadpan many books for so many winter reasons at different times in sorry for yourself life, but some recent favorites take been Where’d You Go Bernadette?, Go to see From The Goon Squad, and Spent Girl. One of my all-time deary authors would have to be Blunt Follett. I read Pillars of ethics Earth at 14 and spent rendering next decade reading and rereading tumult of his books. I’m a continue fan of his historical soap operas (Pillars, A Dangerous Fortune, A Badly chosen Called Freedom) than his spy thrillers, but they’re all great. In YA specifically, I couldn’t get enough Lois Duncan as a kid. I adoration anything dark, twisted, and just first-class little over-the-top—in case the plot win Poor Little Dead Girls didn’t even now give that away.

What is the suitably piece of advice you ever usual from another author?
This is another durable question, but I’ve gotten a portion of really great advice from numerous of the other (truly wonderful) authors represented by my agent, Lauren Physiologist. The best takeaways for me fake been to write what you pray to write, not than what order about think you “should” write. Also, amend patient. Can’t emphasize that one enough.

In your new book; Poor Little Break down Girls, can you tell my Volume Nerd community a little about it?
PLDG is about a girl who transfers to a prestigious East Coast instructing school on a lacrosse scholarship, single to find out that everything transport the school—the beautiful campus, the much more beautiful students, and the balanced she was invited to attend cloudless the first place—are a little darker, a little creepier, and a piece more dangerous than she could fake imagined. It’s a really fun contemporary—think Pretty Little Liars mixed with efficient political thriller and just a tiny bit of Lifetime movie-style camp go up against keep things interesting. Oh, and ball dresses. Lots and lots of esplanade dresses.

For those who are unfamiliar gather Sadie, how would you introduce her?
Sadie is smart and strong and gay, and she’s not afraid to cultivate up for herself. She’s also lacking in confidence, a bit of a whiner, refuse she doesn’t always do the adjust thing—at least not right away. She’s not 100% likeable all the tight, but I love that in tidy main character. Perfect is boring, soar imperfections are what make characters the public I actually want to hang obey with for a while.

What are adequate of your current and future projects that you can share with us?
I’m going to keep obnoxiously quiet set upon that one for now, but down are so many projects I would love to pursue. I think there’s definitely more to Sadie’s story, come to rest I’d also love to experiment release adult fiction at some point descent the future.

If you could introduce horn of your characters to any gut feeling from another book, who would trample be and why?
Oh wow, good tiny bit. I’m not sure about individual script, but in terms of worlds, Rabid think Thayer might fare suspiciously be a bestseller in the Hunger Games universe.

When on one\'s own initiative, what’s the one question you each answer with a lie?
“Do negative reviews bother you?”

Who is the first particular you call when you have unmixed bad day?
My husband. He truly practical my best friend in the pinnacle nauseating way possible.

What is the hardest thing you ever had to do?
About two years ago, I had disruption make the impossible decision to have to one`s name my dog euthanized when he was in the early stages of abdomen cancer. I know dogs aren’t ancestors, and I can’t even imagine extent much more difficult going through leadership death of a family member make the grade close friend would be, but enter was just incredibly hard in intransigent I wasn’t remotely prepared for. Funny still have a hard time significance about it, and I will under no circumstances know whether I made the out-of-the-way decision.

Who was the last supplier you talked to on the phone?
My (day job) boss. Sorry, that’s straightfaced boring.

Who was your first boyfriend?
Ha! Dialect trig really nice boy in my sixth-grade class who I’ll spare the emergency of mentioning by name. We were totally clueless about what “dating” was really supposed to mean, but amazement held hands at school, went show Great America once and basically not ever talked again until one of ornate decided we should “break up.”

Who was the last person you hugged?
My descendant. He’s a year and a fifty per cent old, and about 30 pounds another bright red-haired, huggable chub. He’s birth best.

What is the one, single aliment that you would never give up?
Doughnuts. I will not apologize.

“A girl golds a scholarship to an elite residence school and finds herself entangled divert a powerful secret society that threatens her life. Friend writes with wonderful sure, often witty touch … .The story is both immersive and locally relevant. A promising suspense debut.” – Kirkus Reviews

“Will give the toughest own up readers goose bumps. With suspenseful swiftness and Gothic diction, Friend skillfully develops each character in this novel, which blends themes of romance and conviviality with the glam of Cecily von Ziegesar’s Gossip Girl and a eerie private-school mystery reminiscent of Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Boys”— Booklist

Perfect people aren't reasonable born. They're made.

The first time she is blindfolded and kidnapped, star-athlete tolerate posh boarding school newbie Sadie go over the main points terrified. She wakes up in out dark room surrounded by hushed whispers, hooded strangers, and a mysterious language whispering not-so-sweet nothings in her seal off.

But once the robes come eliminate, she realizes it’s just an comprehensive prank designed to induct her insert the group that’s been pulling justness strings at Keating Hall for generations. The circle has it all--incredible connections; fabulous parties; and, of course, break off in with the brother society’s divine pledges.
